As the academic year winds down, most of my coaching will come to a close, except for a Saturday training session at UCL, and the demanding pace of the past year will ease.
Coaching has taken its toll. I’ve been exhausted and had to deal with tired ligaments in my right arm, caused by the constant training, which lasts up to two or three hours for each session. It reminds me that even though I love what I do, the pace at which I work can wear me down.
But having said that, the sheer joy of teaching at my age is a joy. Working with UCL, the Central London Fencing Club, British Fencing, and the Lansdowne Club has brought a sense of purpose to my life. With that in mind, as I settle in for the summer break, this is my chance not only to rest but also to set new goals for the coming year.
